Sunnyside Elementary in Minnesota Spotlighted as Part of Creating a Healthier Generation

Sunnyside Elementary in New Brighton is one of only five Minnesota schools to receive USDA’s Silver Award as part of the HealthierUS School Challenge for its healthy initiatives in the cafeteria. And, they were recently spotlighted as part of WCCO-TV’s Creating a Healthy Generation that highlights Fuel Up to Play 60 schools in Minnesota.
Sunnyside has four student teams for Midwest Dairy’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program: a Healthy Initiatives Team, a Morning Fitness and Fun Team, an After School Sports Team and a Healthy Breakfast Group. Program advisor Matt Moore says some top accomplishments include sugar-free breakfast on Mondays and Wednesdays, and student announcements encouraging their friends to choose healthy foods first and get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Students making healthy choices are eligible for Friday drawings for Fuel Up to Play 60 prizes. And at the end of the year, Sunnyside School kids are invited to participate in the “30-Mile Monster” – a bike ride from the school to Minnehaha Falls. Congrats Sunnyside!
