Leading by Example: National Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassador Inspires Healthy Changes in His Community

Frank M-C - MN (3)[2]

When Frank M-C first got involved with Fuel Up to Play 60, he never imagined himself leading an event – let alone representing an entire nation of students. But many times throughout this school year, that’s exactly what Frank has done, and he’s done it with ease thanks to the leadership opportunities Fuel Up to Play 60 has offered him.

In honor of National School Breakfast Week and the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program’s Fuel Greatness campaign, Frank’s school – Rochester Alternative Learning Center – held a special recognition event to mark the occasion and help further the conversation around the importance of eating a healthy, nutritious breakfast each day. As part of the program, Frank gave a speech about the incredible opportunities he’s had through the Fuel Up to Play 60 program throughout the year.

Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede helped commemorate the event with a city proclamation and a press conference detailing how schools in the district have prioritized breakfast. Rochester Alternative Learning Center has added a Grab-and-Go Breakfast program, and more than half the student body participates each day. The Fuel Up to Play 60 team makes sure it offers a variety of fresh foods – including fruits, dairy products, whole grain breads and more – rather than pre-packaged items.

Armed with a new smoothie machine, Frank and his team members held their first taste-test during the breakfast event and everyone loved trying the flavor options. They will begin offering smoothies three days a week, with plans to purchase another machine and make them available more often.

Frank credits the leadership training he received at the National Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassador Summit with helping him develop the skills to help implement the program in his school and make a difference in his community. His year as an ambassador has motivated him to seek more leadership opportunities and encourage others to do more as well. Future activities include plans to help lead a school track-and-field day for elementary school students and host a group of dairy farmers for a special farm-to-table event.

Millions of students across the country aren’t fueling up with a healthy breakfast each morning, and Frank and his Fuel Up to Play 60 team members hope to change that.
