Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor in Illinois Recognized for “Active” Leadership

Will Hogan, a physical education teacher and Fuel Up to Play 60 program advisor at Ridge Family Learning Center in Elk Grove Village, Ill., was recently featured in the Journal Newspaper for being honored as the Fuel Up to Play 60 Advisor of the Year for Illinois. The article highlighted Hogan’s Fuel Up to Play 60 accomplishments, including his recognition as one of the “Best in the Midwest” at the Midwest Dairy-sponsored event at Chicago Bears’ Halas Hall football facility. He also helped the school apply for and receive $2,400 in Fuel Up to Play 60 funds.
As a result of Hogan’s two-year active participation in the program, the district spent about $2 million on a new gym. Depending on the day, students spend five to 15 minutes in the morning working out, watching classmates prepare healthy snacks, doing a group dance or meeting in small groups to discuss issues such as empathy, impulse control and anger management. They track their daily food intake and, after school, can participate in a weekly fitness club.
Hogan says the program has helped the students become more active and has resulted in an increase on standard achievement tests. Click here for story. To learn more about becoming a Program Advisor, click here.
