Prior to the Illinois School Nutrition Association’s recent annual conference, 56 school nutrition professionals from across the state participated in a dairy farm tour sponsored by Midwest Dairy. The tour was hosted at Bohnert Jerseys farm in East Moline, IL. The family has 350 Jerseys and 600 acres of land. A short bus ride from the convention center took the group to the farm, where they spent two hours learning about how milk is produced, and all about animal care, milk quality, and farming procedures from dairy farmers Scott Bohnert and his wife Karen. During the bus ride, Midwest Dairy staff provided more information on Fuel Up to Play 60 as well conducted dairy nutrition trivia. Participants received a take-home bag of materials, plus yogurt, individually packaged cheese, and whole grain snacks. They also were able to earn continuing education credits for the tour. The Association’s conference chair and president commented on what a positive experience it was for participants to have the opportunity to experience a day on the farm.
